I have recently been exploring the concept of liminal space. This began in Dececmber 2023 at a short residency at artist led gallery @bothgarlleryldn.
liminal ,the in-between spaces. Corridors and airplane journeys , the spaces where you are neither here nor there- those transitional in-between spaces that exist on the edges of our daily lives.
Liminal experiences also exist and just like liminal spaces they hold a unique energy and potential for transformation. Events such as the teenage years or becoming a parent are the obvious ones however there are micro liminal moments that we can learn from.
While searching for my current home I came across some properties on line that had clearly been spaces that had once held a full and vibrant home and as the years had gone on it was clear the the remaining person had reduced their living to just a room or two of the space. Perhaps the house was now being sold due to either the person not being able to live independently anymore or that they had passed away? A memory was sparked within me of the time I took possession of my first home which had previously been owned by a woman called Phyllis who had passed away.
The bedroom had been wallpapered in an old ornate textured wallpaper that had been repeated painted over the years reducing the detail and the textures had gathered much dust and dirt. Above the bed was the clean and clear outline where once a crucifix had been.
Replicating Phylliss cruifix in the gallery workspace I began to invite visitors to come and sit on the chair below and to have a conversation about the times when they had felt in-between. The crucifix developing a new narrative.
This is still a work in progress and development……
